When properly performed, strength training meets all the requirements for cardiovascular conditioning. Assuming that one trains intensely enough and allows no rest between exercises, heart rate can be elevated to a tremendous degree and maintained throughout the workout.

My father who is now 81!  With 55 years in the exercise industry and 10 mega health clubs under his belt, he stands the tests of time.  He started way back at the Old American Health Club in Virginia Beach at age 19.   By 1980, he owned and operated some of the very first Nautilus training facilities in Virginia including seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC.  He came to Asheville in 1994 and established the very first personal training studio Fitness One-on-One.  He has proven to be a true pioneer in the exercise game.

The HIT Philosophy


HIT (high-intensity training) is a form of progressive resistance training.  HIT is performed in a safe productive environment characterized by a high level of effort and relatively brief and infrequent workouts, as opposed to typical training methods involving low to moderate levels of effort, multiple sets, and longer duration.  Nautilus inventor Arthur Jones originally defined and popularized this form of training in the early 1980’s, often summarizing the general philosophy as “…train harder, but train briefer.
